Ebrahim Raisi made the appeal alongside the Government of Syria which is a close ally of Iran.
In the speech, Prime Minister Raisi declared that “Islamic and Arab countries, as well as all free people of the world, must reach a single position to stop the crimes of the Zionist regime against the oppressed Palestinian people.”
The rising civilian deaths as a result of Israeli airstrikes have provoked an outcry in many Muslim-majority countries. Large protests have been seen in Jordan, Iraq and elsewhere.
Israel‘s air force has been striking targets across the Gaza Strip amid vows to eradicate the militant groups Hamas which held responsible for last weekend’s cross-border attacks.
Israel denies targetting civilians in Gaza and argues that strikes are against militant positions and storage sites.
The Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated areas on the planet with around two million people living within just 140 square miles.
Among those voicing opposition to Israeli actions in Gaza is Conservative MP Crispin Blunt who has declared that the UK “could be complicit in Gaza war crimes”.
The former chairman of the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee told Sky News: “If you know that a party is going to commit a war crime – the forcible transfer of people is a precise breach of one of the statues that governs international law – then you are making yourself complicit,
“As international law has developed in this area, being complicit makes you equally guilty to the party carrying out the crime.”
On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike in Gaza struck a convoy of evacuees heading away south killing a reported 70 people including women and children.
The IDF has said they are looking into the “circumstances’ of the airstrike. Hamas attacks on Saturday, October 7 resulted in the death of 1,300 Israelis – the majority civilians.
Palestinian factions also seized more than one hundred hostages including women and children who remain held in Gaza.
