US President Joe Biden has welcomed the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant issued for Vladimir Putin.
Speaking on Friday after the warrant was announced, the President said his Russian counterpart committed war crimes and that the ICC decision made a “very strong point”.
He added that he thought the charges were “justified”, although the US doesn’t recognise the court.
Mr Biden touched on this in his response, stating: “But the question is – it’s not recognised internationally by us either.”
He added: “But I think it makes a very strong point.”
The US has historically not recognised the ICC out of fears it could choose to prosecute American soldiers.
The court has issued the warrant following allegations that Putin has overseen the abduction of Ukrainian children.
The move is the first against a member of the United Nations security council.
