According to Iran Daily, in arid climates, thirst is an existential threat, and a source of constant anxiety.
That’s why ‘Saqakhane’ is a historically commonplace sight on many a sidewalk across Iran – architecturally characteristic drinking fountains which people, often with an eye to some heavenly reward, endow in the name of their deceased loved ones, offering thirsty passersby a taste of relief.

The COVID-19 pandemic, however, turned these socially beneficial structures into useless things, if not actual road blocks, as their valves have been dismantled in compliance with disease-preventive measures. The fountains are anxious to resume their services, and so are the people of the city.
