Iran rights official denounces Muslim states’ inaction on Gaza

A senior Iranian human rights official has strongly condemned inaction of Muslim countries regarding the Israeli regime’s attacks on Gaza and the massacre of a large number of Palestinian children and women, calling for an extraordinary summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address the issue.

“What other crimes should the Zionists commit so that Muslim countries would convene a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation?” Secretary of the Iranian Judiciary’s High Council for Human Rights Ali Baqeri Kani said in a post on his Twitter account.

He added that holding an OIC extraordinary summit is the “least that Muslim governments can do for the oppressed Palestinian people.”

Gaza and other Palestinian territories have been simmering with anger over Israel’s land grab policies in occupied Jerusalem al-Quds as well as the regime’s desecration of the al-Aqsa Mosque complex, the third holiest site in Islam.

The tensions spiraled into a broader conflict between Gaza and Israel on Monday, days after the regime in Tel Aviv launched a heady-handed crackdown on Palestinian worshipers at al-Aqsa Mosque during the final days of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Since then, the Israeli military has been launching large-scale airstrikes across Gaza, razing homes and civilian infrastructure to the ground. The regime’s artillery and tanks have also been targeting the blockaded coastal enclave.

Despite international calls for an immediate halt of all hostilities, including from United Nations chief Antonio Guterres, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged that the offensive against the Gaza Strip will continue.

At least 139 Palestinians, including 39 children and 22 women, have been killed and about 1,000 others injured in Gaza in the Israeli regime’s latest round of aggression.

Palestinian resistance fighters have been responding to Israel’s aggression through massive barrages of rockets and missiles. They have also brought drones into the equation.

In a separate tweet, Baqeri Kani also took swipe at some Arab countries for normalizing relations with the Israeli regime “under the pretext of peace,” saying they “stabbed in the back of the Islamic Ummah” and therefore should be held accountable for the blood of Palestinian children.

He also wrote another tweet about Gaza and said, “If until yesterday, with the support of the United States and Europe, the so-called advocates of human rights, Gaza was called the ‘world’s largest prison’ due to widespread and gross human rights violations,” it has now turned into “the world’s largest crematorium with the support of some reactionary Arab rulers.”

Pointing to his recent meeting with the Syrian ambassador to Tehran, Baqeri Kani said he had told the envoy that the “coalition of resistance is now stronger and the Zionist regime is weaker more than ever.”

The Iranian human rights official further called on the international community and all freedom-seeking nations and people from any religion to fully defend the oppressed Palestinians and counter the terrorist Zionists.

“Palestine is alive and breathes,” Baqeri Kani pointed out.

Top human rights groups have warned Israel’s actions could amount to war crimes.

“Deliberate targeting of civilian objects and extensive, unjustified destruction of property are war crimes. Destroying entire multi-storey homes making tens of families homeless amounts to collective punishment of the Palestinian population and is a breach of international law,” Saleh Higazi, deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International, said in a statement.

Also, B’Tselem, a leading Israeli rights group, in said in a tweet, “Bombing apartment towers, which are not a military target and leaving dozens of families homeless, is a war crime.”
