He then stated Iran is “not planning to initiate anything” with the US until the Mr Biden returns to the JCPOA.

The UN ambassador also said Iran is in no rush to enter talks with the US.

He added: “It’s up to the US to decide what course of action to take. We’re not in a hurry.”

During the 2020 US election, Mr Biden said he would rejoin the JCPOA if Iran “returns to strict compliance” with the terms of the deal.

The deal placed significant restrictions on Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme in exchange for relief from sanctions.

In a CNN op-ed published in September, he said: “I will offer Tehran a credible path back to diplomacy. If Iran returns to strict compliance with the nuclear deal, the United States would rejoin the agreement as a starting point for follow-on negotiations.

“With our allies, we will work to strengthen and extend the nuclear deal’s provisions, while also addressing other issues of concern.”

Mr Trump pulled out of the JCPOA in 2018 after claiming it failed to stop Iran’s missile programme.

Relations between the US and Iran froze because of the US’ exit from the agreement, with Tehran ramping up nuclear enrichment efforts to pre-JCPOA levels within a year.

At the start of the year Iran began enriching uranium at 20 percent purity at its main Fordow nuclear plant, in a clear breach of the agreement.

Iran has insisted its nuclear programme is peaceful, and said it is ramping enrichment in response to US sanctions enforced by the former President.

In January last year, the US launched a drone strike on top Iranian official General Qasem Soleimani, killing him and nine others.

Agnes Callamard, UN Expert, said the assassination was “unlawful” and an “arbitrary killing”.

Iran retaliated by launching missile strikes at the US and Iraqi army occupied Al Asad Airbase, which injured 110 American military personnel.

Iranian forces then shot down a Ukraine passenger airplane, mistaking it for a cruise missile and killing 176 people.

In December, Iran’s top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was also killed in a roadside attack, but it remains unclear who carried out the assassination.
