‘Inhumane’ US sanctions hurting Iranians: Expert

Washington’s “inhumane” anti-Iran sanctions are hurting the Iranians who were already grappling with US acts of economic terrorism and a shortage of medical supplies that got worse with the spread of coronavirus, according  to a US-based sanctions expert. 

“We are humans. So when something global happens, it impacts every single one of us. And I think this is the time when you come together to aid humanity,” Mehrnoush Yazdanyar, an Iranian-American attorney-at-law and sanctions expert said in an interview on Monday.

Yazdanyar said, in contrary to the need for extending aid during the COVID-19 pandemic, the harsh anti-Iran sanction have made living conditions dire for the Iranian nation.

By imposing sanctions, the Trump administration is “advocating crushing the Iranian people … and you’re going to make sure that you do that by making the conditions around them so dire,” Yazdanyar said in an interview on Wider View.

Human rights violation

The expert on sanctions law said that the US sanctions slapped on Iran were “inhumane”, suggesting that it constituted a violation of human rights.

Yazdanyar said the sanctions were being used as a tool to overthrow the Iranian government.

“Sanctions used as a tool to really bring people to their knees is inhumane,” she said.

“By putting pressure on the people … by saying that people, you know, you need to rise up against the government … and then, also saying we believe in, you know, human rights. And that we don’t engage in violation of human rights … I think that’s where advocating for that is a problem,” she noted.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote a letter to the United Nations secretary general, insisting that the illegal sanctions imposed by the Trump administration had greatly hampered the nation’s medics who were selflessly struggling to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Zarif called on the UN body to take action to defuse the unilateral US sanctions, insisting that any success in exerting pressure on Iran was partly rooted in the international community’s inaction in the face of Washington’s illegal measures.

In the letter, the top Iranian diplomat demanded an immediate end to the US acts of economic terrorism against Iran, urging the UN and its member states to aid the Iranian nation during this time of need.
